The online computer course for beginners is being launched by a company called Kiva, which aims to provide a “complete, fully-virtual classroom experience for a beginner to the fundamentals of computer science.”
“The goal of Kiva is to teach the beginner computer science fundamentals in a way that is simple, easy to understand and fun,” the company says on its website.
“The courses will help you get started learning the basic principles of computer programming, and will help teach you the important concepts of coding, networking, and data science.”
The courses, which will be taught by instructors who are already familiar with coding, will be offered on sites such as Udemy, Coursera, and Courseras.com, with some classes being taught by computer science professors, like Professors Peter Norvig at Stanford University, or Professors Matt Hickey and Paul Oehler at NYU.
In some cases, the courses will be hosted by schools, such as MIT or Stanford.
Kiva has a few other offerings, including a free course called Computer Programming with C++ and a $25,000 computer-based coding class.
“This is the first time we’ve created a fully-featured, completely online computer-focused course,” said Kiva co-founder and CEO Alexi Gersh.
“It’s about getting started with computer science, and it’s about helping you get better.
We think it’s really important to start learning something new.”
The company says its courses are aimed at the “beginner to advanced” crowd, and they are free to enroll in, but it will offer a monthly membership that pays for the cost of the courses.
The company plans to start offering some courses for a “premium” price, with additional modules for “very advanced learners” to choose from.
Kivas co-founders, Alexi and Alex, and co-CEO Adam Levinson both said that the company will launch at least one more course in the coming months.
“We are constantly looking for ways to expand our curriculum, but this is the best opportunity we’ve ever had to offer a completely online program for the beginner,” said Gerscovick.
